Veins Q & A

What do my veins do?

Veins are one of two main types of blood vessels in your body. Their job is to pump blood back toward your heart after your arteries deliver it throughout all parts of your body. The blood that your arteries pump is deep red and full of oxygen, while your veins appear blue because the oxygen is gone, having been delivered to your cells.

Unlike your arteries, your veins are often working against gravity as they carry blood up your legs, arms, and core. To do this, they contain small valves that close when you relax your muscles to prevent the blood from flowing back down.

What conditions can affect my veins?

Several conditions can cause you to see your veins. Visible veins affect the appearance of your body or face (depending on their type), but don’t always require treatment.

Varicose veins

Varicose veins are engorged veins directly below the surface of your skin on your legs. They can appear blue, purple, or even green in color and are caused by broken or inadequate valves.

Spider veins

Spider veins are tiny visible blood vessels under the surface of your skin on any part of your body. Unlike varicose veins, they don’t bulge above your skin’s surface. They can be red or blue, and they can easily become itchy or irritated.

Do I need to visit a doctor about the veins I can see?

Spider veins are generally harmless, but you may wish that they weren’t so visible — especially if they’re on your face. If you don’t like how they look, you can seek treatment from a doctor at Reviva Medical Aesthetics.

Varicose veins can put you at risk for blood clots and ulcers. They’re more unsightly than spider veins, and many patients get them treated just because of how they look.

How are visible veins treated?

The first and least complicated way to treat your visible veins is to improve your circulation. You can do this by:

  • Exercising
  • Elevating your legs
  • Taking regular breaks from standing or sitting for long periods of time
  • Avoiding long, hot baths
  • Wearing compression socks

At Reviva Medical Aesthetics, you can get laser therapy to reduce the appearance of your veins. Small spider veins may disappear immediately after the treatment, but you probably won’t see much of an improvement with your varicose veins until a few months later.

To dress down the visible veins on your legs or face, call Reviva Medical Aesthetics or book an appointment online today.
